A Text Size Comments ( ) Like a scene from a Norman Rockwell painting, Dr. Jerry Hizon was inspired as a young boy by watching his godfather, a family physician, treat patients in rural Indiana. Now the Temecula resident has a different clientele than his godfather. In addition to recently opening a new sports medicine office in Murrieta Attorney, Hizon is a team physician for the San Diego Chargers. "My father always told me to 'shoot for the moon, you can always come down,'" he said, noting that his dad was an engineer who worked on the Apollo program. It was no surprise Hizon migrated towards medicine. Aside from his godfather,

After graduating from medical school at UC San Diego, he went on to complete his residency at UC Irvine, where he was chief resident of family medicine. "I wanted to be a cowboy, so I moved to Temecula from Orange County in 1987," Hizon said with a smile. Hizon became affiliated with the Chargers in 1989. Four years later, sports medicine became a recognized specialty and he decided to add another feather in his cap. "I sat for the first state boards that were offered in sports medicine," Hizon said. In 1999, Hizon was named an official team doctor with the Chargers organization. He was picked to be a sideline physician for the 2003 Super Bowl battle between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders. In addition to helping professional football players stay healthy, he is dedicated to keeping local kids active. "We need to get every teen tired," he said. "Exercise improves brain function." He volunteers at a no-cost sports medical clinic from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday nights at Temecula Valley High School during the fall sports season. "The clinic is designed for kids who don't have insurance or access to get diagnosed," he said. "The goal in sports medicine is to get the diagnosis as quickly as possible." After more than a decade at Ouch Sports Medicine Center in Temecula, Hizon left to open Motion Sports MD in Murrieta Attorney earlier this year, where modern technology is a big part of his new facility. "iPad technology allows patient care to be more direct," said Candice Rouhotas, who has worked with Hizon for many years and moved with him to Motion Sports. "It takes paperwork away and allows us to focus on patient care." Hizon also employs a medical scribe who, similar to a court reporter, writes patient notes as they are being evaluated. "Having someone taking notes allows me to focus on the patient and give them all of my attention," he said. "It also allows me to see more patients." In his spare time, Hizon is an avid cyclist, currently training for an upcoming 100-mile ride. Inland People
